Assistant, Dean, Practice Innovation

The Faculty invites applications for a new full-time Assistant Dean, Practice Innovation, who will be appointed for an initial six-year term with an opportunity for renewal. The successful applicant must possess the qualifications sufficient to be appointed as a tenure track Associate or Full Professor, and who will serve to transform our practice related vision and programs during this period of growth and new investment. Applicants preferably should hold a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy and a Ph.D. in a pharmaceutical sciences or health discipline or a Pharm.D. degree with post-doctoral research training. A record of extra-mural funding, excellence as a learning facilitator with a preference for a track record of achievement in practice innovation, demonstrated leadership skills and a proven, comprehensive understanding of the pharmacy practice arena are essential for this important academic leadership role. The selected candidate will develop a strong program of innovation practice change and the scholarship to document such change which includes successful competition for external funds and engagement in training graduate and postgraduate pharmacy students.

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at The University of British Columbia will be undergoing a significant expansion of size and mission over the next eight years. A state of the art building is scheduled to be opened in August 2012. Between 2011 and 2014, an additional 72 entrance-to-practice seats will be funded each year by the Province of British Columbia (over the period, total first year intake increases from existing 152 to 224 students). As part of this expansion 16 new FTE positions will be created with potential for innovative partnerships and collaborations increasing further the number of faculty hired.

The Assistant Dean will join the Faculty’s executive team with the specific mandate to further define and facilitate strategic pharmacy practice teaching, research and partnership opportunities and priorities. In this capacity the Assistant Dean will work with the Associate Dean, Academic and faculty members from a variety of disciplines to ensure our curriculum prepares graduates for contemporary as well as emerging pharmacy practice; and with the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies and faculty members to expand research support and opportunities that further the goal of improving medication therapeutic outcomes. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with our well established structured practice education program and partners in community and institutional pharmacy practice to ensure that our pharmacy practice teaching placements are sufficient in number and scope as well as innovative in their pedagogical design and execution. The Assistant Dean will also contribute to assuring that our graduates have competencies in leadership, global awareness, cultural sensitivity, self-directed learning, interprofessionalism, self-discovery, communication, and critical thinking.

Salary is negotiable, commensurate with experience, and is subject to final budgetary approval. The closing date for applications is November 30, 2010. Preferred start date is April 1, 2011.
